Lugana > Lombardia > IT

Groppello, Marzemino, Sangiovese and Barbera, 2020

Overlooking the south shore of Italy’s Lake Garda and the mountains beyond is an oft overlooked wine region - Lugana. On this spot, after a great battle, the Red Cross organization was founded by Swiss philanthropist Henri Dunant. This Vino Rosso is named in his honor. We had the pleasure of visiting last October meeting winemaker for Selva Capuzza - Luca Formentini who spent time sharing stories and his family’s delicious wines. The Dunant Rosso has the remarkable and unique ability to be both broad and full-bodied, yet incredibly easy to drink. An exceptional pairing for winter, pastas, stews, meats of all kinds.

Blend: the traditional blend of Groppello, Marzemino, Sangiovese and Barbera

ABV: 13.5%

Soil: Clay and stones

Story: Selva Capuzza is a small farm dedicated to producing wines exclusively from 6 indigenous grape varieties. In the estate, there are many olive trees, a wood which is an old truffle plantation, wide open spaces dedicated to biodiversity, a park with secular mulberries and two little ponds all overlooking the lake and mountains in the distance. There’s a fantastic restaurant Cascina Capuzza a short distance from agriturismo Borgo San Donino, while you'll meet the winery in the middle of the walk. Well worth the stay and a visit if you’re in the area.

The grapes from the different varieties in this blend are harvested and destemmed before being gently pressed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures. The skin maceration, in stainless steel tanks, usually lasts from 7 to 10 days with several daily pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation is typically encouraged, and the wine is then aged in stainless steel tanks for up to 12 months. A small portion may be aged in wood for added texture.

Personality: The wine presents a beautiful bright ruby color, with an intense aroma, featuring fruity notes of cherry and blackberry and enticing spicy hints. On the palate, it is warm, with a smooth tannic structure, revealing a decadent and persistent finish. An undiscovered Italian gem!

Harmony: The wine’s complexity make it versatile for pairing with many dishes, from cold cuts and appetizers to pasta dishes and grilled meats, balancing its soft tannins beautifully.
