Chenin Blanc, 2021

Ah, Chenin Blanc. It’s hard not to love this favorite white varietal of ours. In its homeland on the river Loire, it shines brightest. A great pairing with food, it regularly hosts a bouquet of pear, chamomile, lime zest, and honeycomb, but its most distinguishing feature is a sweet and sour tang - it is the margarita mix of wines, if you will. (And you will). From Vanessa Cherruau’s artisanal négociant project, her team harvested the grapes themselves from neighboring vineyards during a tough year to produce a fresh and chiseled Chenin, evoking the gorgeous and lifted house style. Certified biodynamic.

The Story: Vanessa Cherruau is a steward of one of the Loire’s great terroirs – Chaume. After finishing wine school in Angers, she bounced around the wine industry for a few years before befriending the Rochais family on Chaume hill, who owned Chateau de Plaisance (more a farmhouse, really) and its 25 ha of vines growing on schist forming the bedrock of the appellation. With plans to sell the historic estate to the local cooperative, Vanessa convinced the family to sell to her instead, allowing her to continue the legacy they left behind, while forging her own path toward greatness. Luckily for her, she inherited some of the most well-cared for vines on the hill, as the estate has been certified organic since 1995 and certified biodynamic since 2008. She of course has continued the intensive farming practiced by her predecessors, knowing that taking care of the natural environment was pivotal for success. Since her first vintage in 2019, she has helped raise the image of dry Chenin made on the Chaume hill to where it is now one of the most interesting terroirs in the Loire.

Personality: A gorgeously pure and lifted chenin, concentrated, lively and entirely in balance. Splashes of quince, jasmine, honey, orange oil, and crushed rock abound.

Harmony:  Rich foods come to mind, creamy mushroom risotto, fatty white fish, artichoke dip.
