The Story: Located four hours South of Santiago, González Bastías is a town and a still-operating train station of the last “Ramal” train in South America. It is also the name of this old vineyard, located in the dry interior of Maule in central Chile, just 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean. José Luis Gómez Bastías, fifth generation viticulturist, began working these lands from a very young age. Today, together with his wife, the winemaker Daniela Lorenzo (whose family also lives some stations downstream) are dedicated to preserving the ancient tradition of their ancestors. The work is done with the help of family, neighbors and volunteers from all over the world who come to this special farm for a season with the motivation of learning about natural wine-making and sustainable living. These workers commute by canoe from town across the river each day. Let’s all quit our day jobs and join this special wine commune.
Personality: A surprisingly supple wine, considering its age. The nose shows notes of mandarin orange, Jasmin, lemon peel, lilies, and hints of yellow wax bean. The palate is medium bodied with moderate acidity, a light breeze of orange blossom and a long salty finish. Maximum complexity unfolds with time and a little swirl here and there unlocking its richness.
Harmony: Winter succotash for the win.
