Dolcetto, 2021

Samantha Sheehan and her husband (label designer, Michael McDermott) have enjoyed Italian Dolcetto for years and were excited to make a California version from Split Rock Ranch - a beautiful, family-owned, dry-farmed, and organic vineyard. When Samantha first visited the vineyard to see the rows of organic Grenache that would go into the Poe rosé, she fill in love with the old vine Dolcetto. When she tasted the grapes, she was intrigued by the intense flavors of blueberry, plum, and strawberry - the fruit had bright acidity and crunchy tannin which is absolutely reminiscent of it’s Italian counterpart. Try it with BBQ or a big juicy steak.

Story: Samantha Sheehan founded POE in 2009 after being inspired by the wines she tasted in Burgundy and Champagne.  The goal is not to replicate Burgundy, but rather create alluring, vineyard specific, age-worthy wines revealing the beautiful terroir of California.  There is minimal intervention, judicious use of sulfur, and never any additives.

Personality: This wine is expressive, with vibrant notes of black cherry, cranberry, and red plum. There’s a subtle hint of violet, complemented by earthy tones and a touch of cocoa. The fruit-forward nature of this wine is balanced by light tannins and lively acidity.

Harmony: This Dolcetto pairs wonderfully with pizza, pasta, or a rustic dish like country pork roast. Give it a little chill and let it sing.
