Nero d’Avola and Grillo, 2021

CALA comes from our friend Dario Serrentino who believes the desert-like calcareous soils, and cool night air there in Val di Noto (not far from Noto where Daphne abducts Harper in that episode of White Lotus, Season 2), help temper alcohol, while giving freshness. With CALA, Dario co-fermented musky, red-fruited Nero d’Avola, with the lightening acidity of Grillo. CALA, the word for ‘grape’ in Sicilian dialect, highlights the limestone terroir, and Dario’s natural winemaking touch. It drinks like a welcome oasis of shade - restorative and invigorating. Certified organic.

Grape: 90% Nero d’Avola and 10% Grillo

Soils: White and grey limestone and clay soils

ABV: 12.5%

The Story: FUSO is a project to search for and bottle Italy’s natural and characterful daily drinkers, by importer Portofino. They exclusively work with farmers and producer friends who are committed to organic viticulture, low-intervention, and terroir-driven wines. The grapes from this bottling were harvested from certified organic vines - 20-60 years old. All grapes are co-fermented and macerated on the skins for 6 days in steel, and then 6 months on the lees in steel. Bottled after a light filtering and minimal SO2 add.

Personality: The fruit is juicy and ripe as you'd expect, but there's some cranberry crunch and a wild, gamey bite, too. A little bit of salt, herbs, and texture on the finish contribute to the sense of refreshment.

Harmony: Definitely a red wine that will be even more delicious with a little chill.
