The Story: Set in the midst of the Serralada de Marina Natural Park, mere steps from the Mediterranean Sea and just a few miles away from Barcelona, stands the Can Genís estate, the dream-come-true of the Pujol-Busquets Guilléns family. Their avant-garde project - Alta Alella is a rising star in the region, with this winery that claims to be the closest to Barcelona’s vibrant center. Established in 1991 on the spectacular 19th century grounds with a villa atop the brow of a hillside vineyard, the winery has always practiced certified organic farming techniques, creating a well-balanced ecosystem that respects the native biodiversity. The estate's natty project is called Celler de les Aus (Cellar of the Birds), because each wine is themed after one of the birds that haunt the richly biodiverse vineyards. The vines are grown on Sauló soil which is one of the most important elements that define the wines from Alta Alella: an acidic white granite-based sandy soil with low limestone content, low organic matter and good natural water drainage.

While they make traditional method cavas with the classic blend of Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo, plus some Mataró (Monastrell or Mourvedre) for the rosé version, for the AUS Pét-Nat, they have fled standardization in favor of creating a singular wine capable of expressing the enjoyment of tasting the moment as well as the landscape. Here we have 100% hand harvested Mataró made into a fizzy pink Pét-Nat - meaning the primary fermentation finishes in bottle, capturing the effervescence, then crown-capped,  with zero added SO2; and undisgorged so expect some cloudiness all up in there. Worry not, these lees (aka dead yeast) adds flavor, richness, and texture.

Personality: This bubblegum-pink-colored sparkler has aromas of pear, pomegranate and freshly chopped green herbs. It offers summery flavors of tart cherry, grapefruit, lychee and yuzu that are joined by a note of rose petal on the finish with a whiff of sea salt.

Harmony: We offer this vibe - Barbie goes to a posh Euro beach club, to be enjoyed in a billowing salty breeze. A summer wine if there ever was one.
