Bera, Vittorio e Figli 'Canelli' Moscato DOCG

$32.00

Moscato DOCG < Asti < Piemonte < IT

Muscat à Petits Grains 2023

Ever since we visited Alessandra Bera on her historic estate, we have been wanting to work with her wines again! That day, she treated us to an amazing lunch with her whole family and harvest crew, not to mention vineyard dog Archie. One of our favorites is this Moscato like you’ve never tasted before. After a labor intensive process from field to cellar, the end result is the most vinous, textured, complex, gently bubbly version of sparkling Moscato. Sweet - yes, but succulent and elegant. You must try with gooey gorgonzola (if you can find it) for maximum enjoyment. Certified organic.

The Story: Introducing Alessandra Bera of Vittorio Bera e Figli in Piedmonte. Her family vineyard was first to start bottling and marketing its own Moscato d’Asti in Canelli, the most famous Moscato village in the Monferrato zone of Piemonte back in 1964. But the estate’s history goes all the way back to 1785, when Giovanni Battista Bera purchased land from the Knights of Malta.  From the start, the Bera family set out to do things differently. The vineyard is stunning, on a steep hill below the winery where a warm but windy environment keeps the fruit healthy and able to ripen well while maintaining zippy acidity.  Also special (and quite rare) is the fact that the vineyard was always farmed without chemicals and with an emphasis on biodiversity. An incredible variety of grasses, legumes, herbs and wildflowers grow between the rows, and today it is certified organic.

Fermentation of the superior Muscat à Petits Grains grapes takes place spontaneously with native yeasts and without temperature control or sulfur. None of that is typical in the realm of Moscato d'Asti production. The wine is also not sterile-filtered, like most Moscato d'Asti base wine at this stage, but is instead aged on its lees at cold temperatures in tank. When it is time to bottle, the tank is gently brought up in temperature to kick-start a secondary fermentation; when it hits the appropriate 5.5% alcohol level, the wine is gently filtered, lightly sulfured (a DOCG requirement) and re-chilled to settle in a pressurized tank. After a couple of weeks of rest, the sparkling wine in tank is bottled. This whole process is done in small batches; the later the wine of a given vintage is bottled, the longer it has spent on its lees, adding more depth to it.

Personality: A wine with finesse and complexity; layers of apricot, peach, honey, balanced by clean lime-like acidity. Most of the competition is dull and insipid by comparison. We promise this is the best Moscato you’ve ever had.

Harmony: Desserts of all kind, especially creme brulee. For a mind blowing experience, pick up some fresh blue cheese. You’re welsome!
