Story: For four generations Ca’ del Baio has been a family affair, as is the tradition in the Langhe. Nurtured and passed down from father to son, the vineyards surrounding the Grasso family farmhouse have been added to over time through marriage and acquisitions. These days it’s Giolio Grasso’s three daughters taking the reins. For the Grasso family, simplicity, a sense of sacrifice and the deep attachment they have to their land are pre-requisites for guaranteeing wines of quality. Today the Ca’ del Baio estate takes in 31 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Barbaresco, Treiso and Trezzo Tinella: the first two municipalities are part of Barbaresco winegrowing area, the last one is part of the popular Alta Langa region, which is now famous for white wines, cereals and hazelnuts. All estate-grown, their wines are made from a range of highly valued varieties, some typical of the area while others are more international: the whites include Moscato, Chardonnay and Riesling, and the reds Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Today, their viticultural practices include:  Eco-friendly and sustainable viticulture and production, preservation of biodiversity and the natural environment, respect for the soil through agronomic solutions, and the elimination of chemical weeding in the vineyards. Bravissimo!

Personality: Garnet red color fragrant with dried flowers and fresh geraniums, with light fruity notes reminiscent of raspberry; dry, warm, soft, slightly tannic, and highly drinkable Barbaresco-esque flavor. The undeniable charm of the 2022 vintage is its approachability as there’s a striking immediacy in the generosity of fruit here, which comes into balance with the wine’s tannins and acidity to allow for immediate enjoyment without any fuss or waiting for it to breathe.

Harmony: Ideal with traditional Italian dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, pasta with meat sauce, and a good ol’ burger, but this is also a great picnic wine paired to fresh cured meats, olives, and hard aged cheeses.
