Caleb Leisure 'OFF-GLIDE' Carbo Merlot
Merlot, 2022
Chalk Hill > Sonoma County > California
Not your Grandmother’s Merlot, the fruit for this babe comes from a premier vineyard site in Sonoma on decomposed volcanic soils. Fermented and aged in qvevri. 50% 2-day maceration, 50% 10-day carbonic in flex tank - then the 2 lots are blended together. This wine positively sings of place and (volcanic) soil. It's pretty fun full of red fruit and minerals, and doesn't object to a chill. A journey of feeling, a rush of sensation, a wild wine designed for balancing a chaotic world. Certified organic.

The Story: Caleb Leisure makes all his wines himself, farming about a third of the fruit. He is dedicated to principles of organics and permaculture. His winemaking is guided by ancient traditions bringing Georgian qvevri to his earthen cellar in Cloverdale, California. No additions or subtractions of any kind are made at any point with his wines, keeping them fresh and absolutely wild.
Personality: On the nose you might discover coffee, red fruits, ivy, wildflowers, chai spice, lemon cucumber, and new mason jar. In the mouth you might experience a journey of blue-purple fruit, petunia, freshly plucked sea bean, and lick-a-hot-brick-type tannin, but in a good way, you know?
Harmony: Gather your coven and do some spell casting or tarot. This wine transcends anything as pedestrian as food, but might as well try this with some charcuterie cheese and meats and see what happens.
