Coteaux de l’Ardèche > Rhône > FR

Petite Selve is a friendly red blend from the Southern Rhône by married couple Florence & Benoît Chazallon. Intense sun, fresh nights and a mix of clay & limestone soil produce this ruby colored, serve-fresh, cranberry delight of a baby wine. The grapes come from five parcels, planted in upright bush vines, a training best suited to this wild and windy landscape. The grapes are de-stemmed, lightly crushed, and quickly poured into fermentation vats for 20 days using only indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for four months, in concrete tanks. No filtration. Certified Organic & biodynamic.

Blend: 40% Cinsault, 40% Grenache, 20% Syrah

The Story: The Château de la Selve was first built in the 13th century. It was originally a stronghold at the borders of the Empire and then, the Kingdom of France. Later, it was a hunting lodge of an illustrious family, the Dukes of Joyeuse, before becoming, over the centuries, a working farm. In 2002, Benoit, who has just graduated from the viticulture program at Beaune, fulfilled his dream to create a wine estate in the south of Ardèche. Along with his wife - Florence, they practice organic and biodynamic viticulture, with the aim of environmental preservation and allowing expression of terroir. They tend five parcels on limestone and clay soils, 40 hectares total.

Personality: Intense ruby colour. On the nose the fresh wild berries and red cherry anticipate a fruity, fresh palate, where we also find liquorice and sweet spices. It ends with fine, soft tannins.

Harmony: A wine comfortably cool, which deserves to be served fresh and calls for barbecue, parties, and enjoying with friends. Middle eastern chicken kabob and chargrilled peppers? Hell yeah.
