Arneis, 2022

In 2022, badass winemaker Bree Stock took a call from 2nd generation grower Luisa Ponzi of the famed Willamette vineyard, who offered her the opportunity to work with her old vine, own-rooted planting of Arneis. This variety was given to the Ponzis by the Vietti family in the early 1980’s after the families had visited with each other in their homes of Barolo and the Chehalem Mountains, respectively. “I really love that our climate in the Willamette Valley allows this variety to express its truest (ripest) self and still brings the freshness and acidity we expect from its' Italian origin. I think Oregon has some special sites for Italian varieties and I'm excited to see more people curious about planting them. I feel incredibly honored to be working with these old vines and the only offering of this variety in the state.” You probably need to try this rare thing of beauty!

The Story: Limited Addition wines was born out of the conviction that Oregon’s Willamette Valley was an exceptional winegrowing region capable of growing many high-quality global grape varieties not yet planted, or even imagined there... yet.
Their focus is on varieties that would suit the regions changing climate and be capable of making naturally farmed, naturally made wines, expanding the growing season, varietal diversity and build the regions resilience to climate change.

While 2022 gave the valley its’ warmest ever October (high’s of 86 degrees of days) it was in this late sunny fall that the true varietal characteristics emerged. Thiss fruit was harvested in late October at a ripe and powerful 24 brix which gives an expressive tropical fruit and marzipan driven style of Arneis. The wine was fermented in Chestnut barrels and neutral french oak and this helps to accentuate the varieties sweet nuttiness.

Personality: While Roero Arneis is characterized by mineral undertones, owed to its sandy soils, along with notes of citrus, pear, chamomile and white peach. This wine is bursting with tropical pineapple and guava fruits due to its ripeness with higher alcohol and bright acidity adding to the complexity and charm of Willamette Arneis.

Harmony: Filipino anyone? Try puffed Hominy Ukoy - shrimp and spring vegetable fritters with coconut and toyomansi dipping sauce, or seared scallops with a citrus-infused butter sauce, garnished with toasted almonds could do the trick, how about roast chicken with fragrant herbs like thyme or rosemary?
