Grape: 100% Syrah

The Story: Gérald Oustric is a legend of legends! Any vigneron from the Ardeche will take a deep bow to this man, because they owe him so much. He took over Le Mazel from his father in 1982, and today he is running the place with his loveable sister Jocelyn. The domaine counts 22 hectares planted with local varietals - red and white, atop limestone, clay and sand. Situated in the upper part of the Ardeche valley, the strong northwesterly Mistral winds funnel through bringing a cooling effect, even on southwestern facing vineyards. This is key to the fresh and mineral wines of Mazel, which has been certified organic since 2002. Coming from 40 year old vines, the Syrah is whole cluster pressed, native ferment in stainless steel, then racked to age in concrete for 10 months. No additions of any kind.

Personality: A candied, perhaps waifer-like aroma lifts this delightful juice toward a vibrant palate of brambly bruit, salty black olive, blackcurrant and mineral stone. This wine defies convention, with some serious trippy vibes.

Harmony: Something meaty, like grilled lamb would do nicely.
