Mataro, 2022

We’re thrilled to work with one-woman winery - Osa Major, named loosely after the Big Dipper, one of Emily Fernwood’s favorite constellations. It is visible year round in the northern hemisphere at wine-growing latitudes, and rotates around the North Star over the course of the year and during wine harvest it turns right side up, which she thinks is a lovely metaphor for being ready to hold all the fruit and wine she’s about to produce. Back on earth in the vast Lodi appellation, Emily selected 100% Mataro (aka Mourvèdre) from Clarksburg. Emily chose to treat these grapes as she would a Pinot Noir, with a somewhat cool fermentation and gentle cap management to avoid over-extraction. Elegant and perfumed, this wine bucks the trend of Mourvèdre being a dense and tannic wine. A perfect summer red with a little chill.

The Story: Osa Major Wines is a one woman operation in Northern California. From trucking grapes to selling bottles and everything in between, owner and winemaker extraordinaress Emily Fernwood spent her years after college traveling and working harvest gigs the world over, from California and Oregon to Australia and New Zealand, until founding Osa Major Wines in 2020. As a Bay Area native, the time felt right to return home and explore the incredible variety of geology and history that can be found in the vineyards in some of California’s unique known and lesser known wine regions, all-the-while crafting wines that explore a lighter and brighter side of California winemaking.

Personality: A light-bodied red, with soft tannins and notes of lifted blackberries, fresh plum, and just a hint of gaminess and sage. It’s complex yet oh so easy to drink.

Harmony: A perfect chilled red for summer - pair with all your BBQ favorites.
