The Story: This winery was founded in 1950, and the vineyards are located in the eastern area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the renowned D.O.C. Friuli Isonzo. Two young Friulian winemakers Moreno Ferlat and Federica Tabacchi recently took over the winery and are working hard to take it to new heights. Ferlat has 18 acres of organic vineyards where they grow native varietals such as Pinot Grigio, Fruilano and not so native grapes like like Cabernet Franc. All of Ferlat's vineyards use cover crops to increase biodiversity most of which are herbs that develop spontaneously. The philosophy of the winery is to produce high quality wine with a big personality, but where the terroir and grape varietal are recognizable. To achieve this they use advanced wine making techniques but with absolute respect for nature and the humble traditions of growing grapes and making your family wine.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeast and other than a small dose of SO2 there are no additives, interventions or manipulations in the winemaking process. Three different lots of wine with varying days of skin contact create the layers of this unique ramato style Pinot Grigio: 2, 4 and 8 days skins contact. By blending them, the wine express all the facets of this grape. Fermentation in steel but aging is in concrete tank. The fine lees give greater olfactory and gustatory complexity. Malolactic fermentation is possibly avoided so as not to affect the freshness and liveliness of the wine. Bottling takes place in the following March.

Personality: As Rosa implies, the wine is dark. Too dark for the DOC, in fact. It’s chock full of complexity and unpredictability. The wine is juicy, fresh, and really good. Pretty neutral aromatically, but very fruit-forward on the palate. Rhubarb, tart strawberry, fine tannin.
