Of Czech origin, with a look and demeanor akin to “Evil Thor” as our rep Kathryn suggests - Andréa Calek is a well-known name in the world of natural wine but who nevertheless likes discretion and speaks very little of himself. Considered a wine rebel, he intrigues as much as he makes us vibrate through his juices. One of our all time faves, the A Tois Nous is a bouquet of roses and violets with red fruits with a seductive and easy candy-like edge. Light, festive, with incredible energy. Certified organic, and use of biodynamic "mind-control" (allegedly!) We’ll take it.

Varietals: 90% Syrah, 10% Grenache (36 year old vines!)
The Story: After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Andrea Calek was able to take a short vacation from the Czechoslovakian army. He went to France, liked it, tried to stay longer by coaxing a doctor to write for him a sick note, which he rationally entrusted to his mother to pass on to the army. Ashamed, she reported him a deserter. Charged with delinquency by France, he returned home for a few years later until he met a girl named Stéfana and was able to remain in France at last. There, it was by chance that he encountered the groundbreaking, notorious Gang of Four vignerons (Lapierre, Thevenet, Foillard, and Breton) from which he fell in love with wine-making. And the world rejoices! From the certified organic Calek vineyard in Alba La Romaine, planted on clay-limestone. This wine, once fermented by native yeast in fiberglass, on the skins for 18 days, the wine is moved through gravity flow throughout the winery with 7 month elevage, bottled unfined/unfiltered with very little SO2 at bottling.
Personality: Light, festive, with energy that vibrates. You won’t be able to get enough.
Harmony: A Toi Nous translates to 'here's to you' so why not celebrate yourself with a date night alone. Steak frites followed by a bath perhaps?
