Willamette Valley > Oregon

Dolcetto, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Lagrein, Riesling, Huxelrebe, Scheurebe 2023

The ultimate wine weirdos - Alex and Veronica Neely, embody the Oregon spirit of fearlessness and ruthless experimentation - always native yeast and low intervention. This wine they lovingly refer to as “the garbage dump of our entire production.” They take the sludge from racking process, re-settle it, and create a “Cuvee de Refuse” that otherwise would be dumped down the floor drain. A true zeitgeist as it contains a bit of every wine Libertine makes in a given year. Is it trash, or delicious - or both? You decide.

Story: Alex Neely takes a philosophical approach to wine. He sees himself as a shepherd who guides the grapes along their journey of controlled spoilage. More often than not, the wine decides its own character as he does not pigeonhole them into some preconceived notion of what he imagines they should be. He alters his basic winemaking techniques to adapt to each particular and unique vintage. Therefore, none of his wines taste the same. The only consistency is inconsistency, much like life itself.

For this wine, he posed the following riddle: I had a vision one day while overlooking the valley. What if, the world asked, you assemble all these parts instead of separating them? Is the sum not greater than all it’s parts? Is this a larger message to be extrapolated throughout the world to finally resolve the human condition? The answer lies within the bottle.

Personality: A nose of graphite, dried strawberry, desiccated plum (in a good way) leads to a palette of bright cranberry and cherry scattered across the forest floor. A whisper of dark chocolate lingers throughout the exceptional finish.

Harmony: A unique and utterly delicious wine, unlike others anywhere Perhaps this wine warrants some naughty behavior - TP your friend’s house and pop this baby on the sidewalk to share after you get caught. Maybe they will forgive you?
