Martha Stouman 'Post-Flirtation Red'

$29.00

Contra Costa & Mendocino > California

Zinfandel, Carignan, 2023

We’re excited to be working with Sonoma’s Martha Stouman. Her wines, always joyful and natural, are made from unexpected varietals and offer new takes on California classics, with each wine exhibiting a distinct personality. After 8 years apprenticing around the world, she set out as a self-funded, first generation winemaker and launched her own brand in 2014. A cute man helped her out late at night in the winery some time later, and mislabeled a barrel for a filtration trial “Post-Flirtation”. The name stuck, as well said cute man - they are now married. He drew a napkin sketch of lovers sprawled out on a rug which is now this wine’s label. This is what love looks like, folks! The 2023 vintage blends Zinfandel with Carignan for a chillable juice bomb.

ABV: 12.5%

Story: After 8 years apprenticing around the world, Martha set out as a self-funded, first generation winemaker to answer the question, “What does California taste like?” When Martha founded her own brand in 2014, she started by exploring warm and breezy regions that allow for natural farming. She was thrilled to find a handful of dedicated farmers, primarily growing Mediterranean grapes in the Ukiah area of Mendocino County, Contra Costa County and Suisun Valley. She has been making wine from their fruit and laughing with them ever since. Martha also found two traditionally planted, head trained, dry farmed vineyards that she now leases, allowing her team to farm 25% of the production. Her wines, always joyful and natural, are made from unexpected varietals and offer new takes on California classics, with each wine exhibiting a distinct personality.

The Post-Flirtation Red is a 62/38 blend of Zinfandel (100% destemmed from Contra Costa) and Carignan (95% whole cluster, 5% destemmed from Mendocino) hand-harvested and fermented separately. A mixture of
punchdowns and pumpovers were used to gently extract tannin and each lot was pressed prior to dryness. Aged in a combo of stainless steel and neutral oak barrique for 6 months before blending with a small percentage of reserve Carignan from 2021, which aged in neutral oak barrique for 28 months. Unfined. Unfiltered so expect a little sediment, but that just makes it tastier.

Personality: It’s light-bodied, chillable, and crushable, with bright acidity and juicy red fruit.

Harmony: This concentrated kitchen chameleon carries the banner for California crowd-pleasers. Chill this baby down, sprawl out on a rug with your lover(s) in front of a fire, order a pizza and have a go at this bottle.
