Grape: 100% Carignan
The Story: Gérald Oustric is a legend of legends! Any vigneron from the Ardeche will take a deep bow to this man, because they owe him so much. He took over Le Mazel from his father in 1982, and today he is running the place with his loveable sister Jocelyn. The domaine counts 22 hectares planted with local varietals - red and white, atop limestone, clay and sand. Situated in the upper part of the Ardeche valley, the strong northwesterly Mistral winds funnel through bringing a cooling effect, even on southwestern facing vineyards. This is key to the fresh and mineral wines of Mazel, which has been certified organic since 2002.
Personality: The dense palette shows intense cherry, raspberry, and chocolate notes. Finish shows tannins reminiscent of smoky souchang tea and gentian. This wine defies convention, with some serious trippy vibes.
Harmony: Has the punch to pair with smoked meats, barbecue sauces, or duck confit.
