Weissburgunder aka Pinot Blanc, 2025

Judith (OO-dith) Beck is one of the “It girls” of the Austrian natural wine scene. Her Weissburgunder fruit comes from the hills of the Wagram growing area where waves of the primeval ocean once met the shore leaving behind a mosaic of soils and minerals that gifts this wine profound complexity. Following the hand harvest, bunches are whole-cluster-pressed. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeast in old Acacia wood casks occurs naturally. Aged on the lees for 6 months prior to bottling. Beck’s treatment of this wine has evolved in the last couple of vintages and is now with a touch a skin contact making it a baby orange wine. It still has lovely fruit, freshness and drinkability but just with hint of savory, skin contact character. Biodynamically farmed.

The Story: The Judith Beck estate is based in the Burgenland commune of Gols, in the Neusiedlersee region, on the eastern – and warmest — side of the Lake Neusiedl, at the border of Hungary. Judith’s parents, Matthias and Christine Beck, founded the family estate in 1976. Judith Beck made her first vintage in 2001 and in 2004 she assumed full control of the winery. Badass alert! In 2007, Judith converted the entire estate to Biodynamic viticulture, following the principles of fellow Austrian - Rudolf Steiner. Judith cultivates 20 hectares of vines in the vineyard sites of Altenberg, Gabarinza, Salzberg and Schafleiten. 70% of the area is planted to red varieties –  Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir --with the remaining 30% planted to white varieties – Welschriesling, Neuburger, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. Vines are planted at high densities of up to 7,000 vines per hectare to limit yields and ensure ripe fruit at harvest time. Soils range from sand, loam and clay on the lower vineyards to limestone, higher up on the ridges. The diverse soils form the ideal basis for complex, multi-faceted wines that reflect their stunning origin.

Personality: Fruity & Balanced, Mild and a little bit salty, maybe a little bit creamy with notes of peach, clementine, and apricot.

Harmony: Potato latkas, German sausage with bacon and apple sauerkraut
