$28.00

Valle de Casablanca > Chile

Pinot Grigio, 2025

As big fans of Northern Italian skin-contact wines, two star Chilean winemakers decided to start a small side project informed by this style. They currently produce two wines, both of which are made with long skin fermentation and maceration in terracota amphoras brought to Chile from Tava, Italy. One is this Pinot Gris planted in 2007 in Lo Ovalle, in the Casablanca Valley. The Izaro vineyard is 7 acres is planted 100feet above sea level on granite and white clay. The fruit is farmed sustainably, handpicked, and whole cluster spontaneous fermentation in aforementioned amphora. The fruit is macerated on the skins for 3 months! Then spending another 9 months in the same vessel with 4 months lees contact adding a rich texture. The wine receives a light pad filtration before bottling under wax capsule. Nanoscopic quantities are produced, and once again we secured some of this singular PG for you.

The Story: Vinicola Atacalco is a joint project of Chilean Wine veterans Ricardo Baettig and Carlos Spoerer. These two friends and colleagues began making wine under their own label in 2017, even though their respective growing areas are 6 hours apart. Ricardo is one of Chile’s most highly regarded winemakers and he has been working with Casablanca and Itata vineyards since the 1990’s. Carlos’ family has owned a farm in Itata for many years so he has strong ties to Concepcion and Itata. Ricardo is a literature and history buff and Carlitos is a punk rock and post-punk fanatic.

Personality: With 4 months of skin contact in amphorae, this is a wine that beams dark pink in the glass. On the palate this is ultra-refreshing with melon, cranberry, orange peel and bright acidity.

Harmony: Given it’s a vibrant expression of coastal freshness and purity this wine begs for seafood or light vegetarian fare. Also try Gricia ramen, with sun noodles, white miso, peppercorns, and crispy duck prosciutto.
