Albariño, 2022

Santa Ynez Valley > Santa Barbara County > California

C5 Vineyard is a relatively warm site located in the heart of California’s Santa Ynez Valley, thus warmer than the comparatively chilly climes of Rias Baixas in NW Spain - ancestral home of Albariño. Here we have a Pet-Nat expression from Los Chuchaquis, and it is muy bueno. "Chuchaqui (choo-CHA-key) is a Quechua word from South America that literally means "without legs". In Ecuador, the word is colloquially used to refer to "he or she who is perpetually hungover" and often affectionately used for the local town drunk."

The Story: With partner Jehan Hakimian, Ryan Stirm makes wines under the ‘Los Chuchaquis’ label - an experimental line of interesting fruit sources and combinations, plus unique winemaking, that allow the duo to play with wines that fall even farther outside the California mainstream. The Champelli is a blend of fruit picked from the C5 Vineyard over three passes throughout September 2021. All the fruit was directly pressed to tank for settling, before fermenting spontaneously, separately. The lots were blended 2 months post-harvest, then a tank of chilled reserve Albariño juice was added at bottling to 16 Gal/liter residual sugar (for bottle fermentation ( meaning: medium low spritz level and zero risk of oopsie explosions wine bombs.) No added SO2, unfined, unfiltered, and non-disgorged.

Personality: This is basically a margarita in wine form. A sparkling margarita. De nada. Yet still elegant, like wearing a peacock for a hat.

Harmony:  Chips and salsa, guacamole, homemade nachos, what are you waiting for?
